{"id":232,"date":"2022-09-13T22:08:12","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T21:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/SSLHG\/?page_id=232"},"modified":"2023-12-02T16:35:15","modified_gmt":"2023-12-02T16:35:15","slug":"clubs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/index.php\/buildings\/clubs\/","title":{"rendered":"Clubs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>21 Club, Whithead Street<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.455), 18px);\">Located in the old Hogg Brothers Exchange Buildings it opened in the early 1960s and it was gutted by fire in March 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-21-Club-SG-STH0019597.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5459\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">21 Club (South Tyneside Libraries, Shields Gazette, STH0019597)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-21-Club-2022-08-25.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5458\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Metro car park &#8211; 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beach Club\/Shoreline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.455), 18px);\">The Beach Club opened in 1962, the building was owned by South Shields Corporation and it was run by Councillor Douglas Marshall.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Beach-Club-1962-EC.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5460\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">1962<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1968 the name was changed to the Shoreline Club which quickly gained a very unsavoury reputation.  It closed in the late 1980s and the Sundial pub was built on the site in 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>British Legion, 22 Winchester Street<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British Legion opened in 1921 and was one of the first to open in the North East.&nbsp; Originally it was based in the Drake Buildings in Ocean Road but in 1925 it moved to new premises at 22 Winchester Street. In the Shields Daily Gazette on the 4<sup>th<\/sup> December 1925 it advertised:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAssistance and advice given in all matters relating to ex-servicemen and their dependents\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-British-Legion-WinchesterSt-SG-TH0019655.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5463\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">British Legion Winchester Street (South Tyneside Libraries, Shields Gazette, STH0019655)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It later became the Legion and Workingmen\u2019s Club.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-British-Legion-WinchesterSt-STH0004791.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5464\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">British Legion Winchester St (South Tyneside Libraries STH0004791)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The club had 1,000 members and was forced to close in 1984 when the council wanted the land to \u201cbuild new office buildings on the corner of Winchester Street and Anderson Road\u201d.&nbsp; The building then became Porters Bar Restaurant it is now Mambo\u2019s Wine and Dine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-British-Legion-22-Winchester-Street-Now-Mambos.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5462\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mambos &#8211; 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cellar Club, 45 Beach Road<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opened in 1956 by Gladys Hogg, she was the mother of Stan Henry of Bailey Organisation fame.&nbsp; Originally it was a Jazz club it later featured pop, R&amp;B and soul bands.&nbsp; It closed in November 1966 when the New Cellar Club opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cellar Club (New), Thomas Street (Club No 1)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally called the New Cellar Club it opened on 2<sup>nd<\/sup> December 1966, it was owned by Stan Henry of the Bailey Organisation.&nbsp; Cream played on the opening night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Cellar-Club-1966-Opening-Cream.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5468\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cellar Club Opening Cream &#8211; 1966<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Famously Jimi Hendrix played on Wednesday 1<sup>st<\/sup> February 1967, tickets were 6 shillings.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Cellar-Club-1967-Jimi-Hendrix.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5469\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cellar Club 1967 Jimi Hendrix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other bands to appear were Alexis Korner, Soft Machine, Long John Baldry, Rory Gallagher, Chicken Shack, Family and The Nice.&nbsp;&nbsp; It became the Chelsea Cat in 1969.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chelsea Cat Night Club, Thomas Street, (Club No 2)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It opened as the Chelsea Cat in late 1969 as a discotheque rather than a live music venue.&nbsp; The Chelsea Cat closed in the 1980s.&nbsp; It later became Sugar Daddies then The Tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Chelsea-Cat-1969.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5471\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chelsea Cat 1969<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cellar Club (New), Thomas Street, (Club No 3)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opened on Monday 5<sup>th<\/sup> June 1995 in the old Chelsea Cat building.&nbsp; It had performances by Kenny Ball, Alan Price, Spencer Davis, the Yardbirds and one of the most disappointing gigs I ever saw Peter Green\u2019s Splinter Group.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Cellar-Club-1995-George-Melly.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5470\" style=\"width:358px;height:450px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cellar Club George Melly 1995<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately having big names in a small venue was not sustainable and it closed in 1999.&nbsp; It is a dentists called Wearside Orthodontics now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Chelsea-Cat-Dentist-Now.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5472\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dentist &#8211; 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Freemason\u2019s Hall, Ingham Street<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hall was opened on 9th February 1885 the Regular Meeting of St. Hilda Lodge and the St. Hilda and Hadrian Lodges began working in their new home and remain there to this day. The cost of the Hall was financed by a Mortgage which was finally paid off on 1st October 1916. In 1925 the hall was extended and improved. The Lodge Room was enlarged, the Banqueting Hall extended to accommodate 170 diners (fire regulations have reduced this substantially) and new Club Rooms, Kitchen, Servery etc., added.  It is still used by the Freemason&#8217;s today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Ingham-Street-1983-Lubi-STH0004526.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5479\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ingham Street 1983 (South Tyneside Libraries, Ken Lubi, STH0004526)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Ingham-Street-2022-06-15-TF.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5480\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ingham Street &#8211; 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hedworth Hall, Dean Road<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Built on the site of Woodside, a grand house at Westoe, the Hedworth Hall Masonic Lodge opened in 1925 at a cost of approximately \u00a320,000.&nbsp; During the 1960s and 70s on Saturday it was a club called the \u201cGolden Slipper Club\u201d though it was usually called the \u201cYella Welly\u201d. It closed as a Masonic lodge in 2007. It is now a venue called Hedworth Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Hedworth-Hall-Dean-Road.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5478\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hedworth Hall Dean Road &#8211; 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Irish National Working Men\u2019s Club and Institute, 3 Keppel Street<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opened on Saturday 28<sup>th<\/sup> September 1912 with a speech saying: \u201cThey should have associations of an Irish National character to keep well to the front of the Irish national cause.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Irish-National-Club-1912-Open.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5482\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Irish National Club 1912 Open<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Irish-National-Club-1900s-3-Keppel-St-STH0005671.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5481\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Irish National Club 1900s 3 Keppel St (South Tyneside Libraries STH0005671)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Easter Rising of 1916 occurred the club did not support this and sent a telegram saying they: \u201cstrongly condemn the Sinn Fein revolt\u201d.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Irish-National-Club-1916-Easter-1916.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5483\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Irish National Club 1916 Easter 1916<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The club closed about 1924, the site later became Riddick\u2019s shoe shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Irish-National-Club-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5484\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Empty shop &#8211; 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kismet Club, 33 New Green Street<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opened about 1965 by Sayyad Shah from Kashmir.&nbsp; It closed in XXXX. They consist of a large lecture hall, billiard room, secretary\u2019s and committee rooms\u201d.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lectures were held every month on a diverse range of engineering topics:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe Action of the Stresses on the Moving Parts of an Engine\u201d &#8211; Monday, October 26<sup>th<\/sup> 1891<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe Electric Lighting of South Shields\u201d \u2013 Monday, November 8<sup>th<\/sup> 1897<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cElectricity: Its Powers and its Promises\u201d \u2013 Monday, 29<sup>th<\/sup> January 1900<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Marine-Engineers-1900-Electricity.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5499\" style=\"width:450px;height:278px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">1900 Electricity<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cN.B &#8211; Unfortunately, the \u201cPersey\u201d club forgot to register the club with the Chief Constable and the Committee were each fined 30\/= and costs.&nbsp; In 1906 there was a fire at the club and in June 1<sup>st<\/sup> 1925 32 members of the club were on a charabanc trip to Berwick, the brakes failed on a steep hill and the driver crashed into a bridge, the charabanc was left balanced precariously on the bridge and luckily no one was killed.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Club-Perserverance-Club-Sign-2022-08-25.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5507\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Perserverance Club Sign &#8211; The police found 80 persons present with 13 or 14 not being members, there were a wide range of other failures found.&nbsp; Detective Bruce said \u201cThe club was little more than a drinking den\u201d.&nbsp; It was struck off after this.&nbsp; It became Parker\u2019s Caterers then Savoy Furniture, It is YYY now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RAF Club, 4 Dean Road<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Formed in 1946 they bought their own premises in 1948. On 10th July 1981 it became the Rum Runner Club opened by the well known racehorse Red Rum, then it became Banwell&#8217;s about 1985, Limelights in about 1990 and then Cube.  The site was demolished in 2006 and is now occupied by the Job Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rupert\u2019s Night Club, Ocean Road<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opened on June 14<sup>th<\/sup>, 1972, by the Noble Organisation, membership was 25 pence.&nbsp;
